Project overview

The Al Deebel is a 270-metre LNG carrier operated by MOL LNG Transport.

During drydock in November 2015, the vessel was coated at N-KOM Shipyard in Qatar using Jotun's marine coating system.

The challenge

An LNG carrier operates in a demanding marine environment where the coating system needs to provide long-term corrosion protection, hull fouling protection and a durable finish across different areas of the vessel.

The drydock environment also creates pressure to complete coating work efficiently.

The coating solution

The system consisted of:

Underwater hull

  • Jotamastic 90
  • SeaQuantum X200

Topsides

  • Hardtop AX

Jotamastic 90 was selected for long-lasting anticorrosive protection, while SeaQuantum X200 was used for fouling protection.

Hardtop AX provided the topside finish and was selected for its combination of application properties and appearance.

The result

The project brought together three specialised coating technologies to address different requirements across the same LNG carrier.

Jotun reports that SeaQuantum X200 was used as part of its Hull Performance Solutions, while Hardtop AX provided the required durable cosmetic finish to the topsides.

Why this matters

Marine coating systems have to be specified according to where they are being used.

The underwater hull, waterline and topside areas all face different conditions, which is why a complete marine specification can involve several complementary products.
