Artist Studio Roof – SUNGUARD White and Monoguard

Project Overview

New Guard Coatings recently supplied a roof coating solution for a UK-based artist studio, combining SUNGUARD White with Monoguard to provide both solar-reflective and protective performance.

The project presented a relatively straightforward but increasingly important requirement: improving the internal thermal environment of a lightweight studio building while protecting the external roof surface.

Project Requirements

The studio was susceptible to significant heat gain during periods of hot weather.

For lightweight buildings with substantial roof exposure, solar radiation can rapidly increase the temperature of the roof surface and consequently the internal environment.

The requirement was therefore for a coating system capable of contributing to reduced solar heat gain while also providing durable roof protection.

Coating Solution

The selected system incorporated SUNGUARD White and Monoguard.

SUNGUARD White was selected for its solar-reflective characteristics, providing a highly reflective white finish designed to reduce heat absorption at the roof surface.

Monoguard complemented this approach by providing the underlying protective roof coating system.

The combination created a solution focused on both thermal performance and long-term roof protection, rather than simply aesthetic refurbishment.

Project Outcome

The system was installed approximately two years prior to the customer's latest feedback.

During particularly hot summer conditions, the studio owner reported a substantial improvement in the internal environment, describing the studio as significantly cooler than the external conditions.

The feedback provides a useful real-world example of the potential benefits of reflective roof coatings when applied to lightweight buildings with high solar exposure.

For commercial buildings, workshops, studios and other structures where internal temperatures can become problematic, solar-reflective roof coatings can form part of a wider strategy for improving the building environment.

Technical Considerations

The project also demonstrates why roof coating selection should be based on the actual requirements of the building.

Factors including substrate condition, existing coating compatibility, roof exposure, required reflectivity, application conditions and expected service life should all be considered before specifying a system.
