Luna Park Cyclone: Long-Term Protection for an Iconic Coastal Steel Structure
Project Overview
The restoration of the Cyclone roller coaster at Luna Park Sydney required a coating solution capable of combining long-term protective performance with the high-quality aesthetic finish expected of an iconic public attraction.
PPG partnered with Luna Park to restore the structure using a coating system designed around durability, colour retention and maintenance requirements.
Environmental Exposure
The Cyclone operates in a challenging coastal environment.
Its exposed steel structure is subject to:
- Coastal atmospheric conditions
- Moisture
- UV exposure
- Weathering
- General operational wear
For a publicly visible steel structure, the coating specification therefore needs to address both corrosion protection and long-term appearance.
PPG PSX ONE
PPG's PSX ONE technology was selected as part of the restoration solution.
The product is a polysiloxane coating designed to provide durable protective performance while maintaining colour and gloss.
This combination is particularly relevant to architectural and high-profile infrastructure where the coating is required to provide both functional protection and an attractive appearance.
PPG identifies the Cyclone project as an example of PSX technology being used to help restore the ride while providing durability, colour retention and easier future maintenance.
Lifecycle Considerations
For a structure exposed to coastal conditions, the initial coating application is only one part of the maintenance strategy.
The selected coating system needs to provide appropriate resistance to environmental exposure while helping minimise the frequency and extent of future maintenance.
Colour and gloss retention are also important when the asset is a prominent part of a public-facing environment.
