Umba oil tanker: achieving a high-quality marine coating finish with Jotun

Jotun reference case – Umba, RPK Nord, China|[GB]

Project overview

The Umba is a 332.95-metre oil tanker owned by RPK Nord.

The vessel underwent coating work at Huarun Dadong Dockyard in China, where Jotun's marine coating systems were used across the vessel.

The challenge

Large commercial vessels require coating systems that can provide corrosion protection while also achieving a consistent, high-quality finish across extensive areas of steelwork.

Application efficiency is particularly important during drydock operations, where time and coating performance both matter.

The coating solution

The coating system consisted of:

  • Jotamastic 87
  • Hardtop AX
  • SeaConomy 900

Hardtop AX was used as the topcoat to provide the finished appearance and durability required for the vessel.

Application and finish

One of the notable aspects of the project was the finish achieved with Hardtop AX.

Jotun reports that the product produced exceptional gloss with minimal dry spray, while some areas were successfully applied by roller with a very good visual result.

The result

The project demonstrated how a marine coating system can combine protective performance with application characteristics that help achieve a consistent cosmetic finish.

For large vessels, that balance is important. The coating needs to protect the underlying steel while also meeting the visual standards expected from modern commercial shipping.

Why this matters

Marine environments expose steel to some of the most demanding corrosion conditions.

A properly specified coating system can provide protection while also helping contractors achieve the required finish efficiently.

NGC supplies Jotun marine and protective coating systems for demanding marine, offshore and industrial applications.
