Well-Safe Guardian Rig: Protective Coatings for Major Offshore Asset Refurbishment
Project Overview
The refurbishment of the Well-Safe Guardian represents a substantial offshore asset-maintenance project involving the repair and recoating of thousands of square metres of structural steel.
Originally delivered in 1985 as an Earl & Wright Sedco 700-series drilling unit, the rig had operated on the UK Continental Shelf for more than 30 years.
Following acquisition by Well-Safe Solutions, the rig was refurbished for a new role as a well plug and abandonment platform.
The refurbishment was undertaken at Nigg Energy Park on Scotland's Cromarty Firth, with fabric maintenance carried out by Access & Coatings, part of Global Energy Group.
The Project Challenge
The refurbishment involved extensive steel repairs.
Approximately 2,950m² of repair work was required to the box girder and underside of the helideck, with another 4,800m² of repairs to the VDM and columns.
The coating specification therefore needed to accommodate significant areas of mechanically prepared steel while delivering the durability required for a demanding offshore operating environment.
Jotun Protective Coating System
The specified Jotun products included:
Barrier Smart Pack
A zinc-rich protective coating forming part of the corrosion-control system.
Jotamastic 90 WG
A water-compatible epoxy mastic suitable for demanding maintenance applications.
Hardtop One
A polysiloxane topcoat providing durable colour and gloss retention.
Marathon 550
A surface-tolerant, abrasion-resistant epoxy designed for high-corrosivity environments.
The combination provided a multi-product coating approach designed around the requirements of the refurbished steelwork.
Application Performance
A significant consideration during the project was the practical application of the coating system.
The project team reported positive experience with the spray application of Barrier Smart Pack and Hardtop One, highlighting their workability, film-thickness control and ability to produce a firm, closed coating.
This is particularly relevant to large-scale refurbishment projects where application productivity and consistency can have a direct impact on programme efficiency.
Long-Term Asset Protection
For offshore assets, coating performance is an important part of lifecycle maintenance.
Steel structures are exposed to aggressive atmospheric conditions, moisture and, depending on location, splash and immersion environments.
Selecting a coating system around the specific exposure category, substrate condition and required service life is therefore critical.
