Choosing the Right Resin floor for your facilities

When it comes to resin flooring, knowing exactly what your site needs and making the right investment can appear complicated and time consuming, especially given the flooring and coatings related jargon.

At New Guard Coatings, we’re often asked a whole range of questions regarding flooring, including things such as:

  • “Which resin floor type is best for food manufacturing facilities?”
  • “What coating thickness do I require to withstand for forklift traffic?”
  • “Which is the best coating option if I have limited downtime in my facility?”

For anyone responsible for floor coatings, including facilities managers, project managers, warehouse operators, engineers and architects; FeRFA standards provide a trusted framework for selecting the correct coating system before starting your project.

FeRFA’s classification system answers all of the above by grouping resin flooring into eight clear categories, from simple floor seals to heavy-duty screeds. Below we breakdown these categories into a simple easy-to-follow table which explains the differences. The classification ultimately helps both end users / applications and specifiers speak the same language. Each category is defined by the overall coating thickness and durability, and the typical area of use.

FeRFA Resin Flooring Classification Table:

1

Floor Seal

A thin, two-or-more-coat system, often solvent- or water-borne, that protects and enhances the existing substrate.

Light Duty

Up to 150 µm

2

Floor Coating

A solvent-free, two-or-more-coat system that provides a hard-wearing and decorative finish with improved resistance to abrasion.

Light to Medium Duty

150 µm to 300 µm

3

High Build Floor Coating

A thicker, solvent-free epoxy coating that offers excellent wear and chemical resistance for industrial and commercial floors.

Medium Duty

300 µm to 1000 µm

4

Multi-layer Flooring

A "sandwich" system built with multiple layers of coatings and aggregates. It is often used for decorative purposes, like acrylic flake systems.

Medium to Heavy Duty

> 2 mm

5

Flow Applied Flooring

Also known as "self-smoothing" or "self-leveling," this system is seamless, durable, and resistant to many chemicals.

Medium to Heavy Duty

2 mm to 3 mm

6

Resin Screed Flooring

A trowel-finished system that is heavily filled with aggregates and sealed to minimize porosity.

Medium to Heavy Duty

> 4 mm

7

Heavy Duty     Flowable Flooring

A heavy-duty, seamless floor designed for areas with heavy traffic and chemical spills. It can be installed relatively quickly.

Heavy to Very Heavy Duty

4 mm to 6 mm

8

Heavy Duty Resin Flooring

A trowel-applied, aggregate-filled system that is very durable and impervious throughout its thickness. It is highly resistant to impact, abrasion, and chemicals.

Very Heavy Duty

> 6 mm

When working with our customers we always recommend considering five key points, as these can vary massively depending on the given industry – from manufacturing to logistics, or engineering to food facilities.

1. Traffic

Pedestrian? Trolleys? Forklifts? Continuous heavy loads? Often categorised as light, medium or heavy.

2. Expected Lifespan (life to first maintenance).

Short-term refurbishment or long-term infrastructure investment?

3. General Exposure

Is there anything over and above the traffic requirements? Such as cleaning chemicals, oils, acids, solvents?

4. Hygiene Requirements

Is the area inspected, washed down, or regulated? Is there a low oudor requirement?

5. Finish Appearance

How do you want the floor to look? Is there a particular colour or gloss level?
