HPI

H.P.I – Hydrocarbon Processing Industry Coatings

We are proud to be the Jotun U.K. preferred HPI coatings distribution company. We can offer you solutions to the multiple issues you may have in your project.

With over 30 years’ experience you can be rest assured that we will provide you with the advice you need to ensure a fast return to service for your storage tanks, pipelines, vessels, valves, bunds etc.

With the New Guard Coatings Group you now have access to the most comprehensive database of proven solutions covering projects that range from temperatures as low as -196°C up to 1000°C.

Choosing the correct HPI coating for your project is essential.

H.S.E – Health, Safety, Environment

All are increasingly important in the modern workplace, our coatings more than meet the proposed V.O.C. legislation, and we continue to develop both water-borne and high-solids HPI products.

The Value of Time

Our coatings are continuously developed to ensure application at much wider temperature ranges, you can be assured that you are using the correct HPI coating to reduce your system downtime meaning improved profitability due your site being back in service faster. With our support the correct HPI system will mean there’s less chance of system failure ultimately saving you money.

The Life Cycle

The longer the lifetime of your HPI coating system, the greater the potential for your cost savings. The subsequent reduction of further maintenance and shutdown time is vital over the life cycle of your HPI system.

HPI Solution areas

1. Temperature

An essential part of any process is the temperature required for reaction to allow the efficient operation of systems. For external areas there are two considerations in addition to temperature; exposed to atmosphere areas and insulated areas.

Insulated steel is often referred to as corrosion under insulation (CUI) the challenge here relies in the fact that it is impossible to keep moisture out of a system. Then with the introduction of extreme temperatures the steel will go through significant cycles, creating corrosion issues in a matter of months. With the introduction of coatings such as Jotatemp 250, Jotatemp 1000 Ceramic and Jotatemp 540 Zinc, you can be assured they will provide you with excellent corrosion protection specifically designed to meet and exceed the temperature ranges you require.

Exposed steel suffers from other challenges in corrosion protection due to the harsh environments that are prevalent in HPI Plants. However temperatures here are often in a lower range where moisture will not be driven off so easily, therefore corrosion again will occur over time.

Coatings systems such as Barrier Smart Pack, Jotamastic Smart Pack HB and Hardtop One are all proven to meet and exceed your requirements to manage atmospheric corrosion protection. This actual system has passed one of the industry’s most challenging test regime of mechanically prepared surfaces making it ideal for maintenance scenarios.

2. Chemical Resistance

When working with oil derivatives and chemicals, chemical resistance is clearly what your attention should be paid to. In some ways this is an area that is easier to manage than other areas of protection, because we will know the exposure and the temperatures tank linings need to resist. With HPI chemical resistant coatings, focus must be on the choice of coating, the surface preparation and the application process.

Identifying the chemicals in question will lead to the careful selection of appropriate tank lining coatings;

For biofuels, acids and more aggressive chemicals – a vinyl ester coating such as:

Chemflake Special – the fastest tank lining for acid storage tanks.
A tank lining for the resistance to products such as sour crude oil up to 160⁰C : Tankguard Plus a versatile novolac epoxy tank lining for outstanding chemical resistance at high temperatures.

Tankguard SF a solvent free novolac epoxy tank lining which offers excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals and solvents applied in film thicknesses as low as 150um – the benefit of two-solvent free coats in the time of one.

For the long-term storage of petro-chemicals Tankguard Storage is a versatile novolac epoxy coating tank lining offering excellent chemical resistance.

3. Pressure

Pressure vessels are probably the most complicated HPI area to protect.
Besides the pressure itself, there are the obvious challenges in the chemical process within the vessel and the temperatures that often accompany them. The choice of lining must therefore be based on the unique specification and often go beyond a coating type of lining to rubber or ceramics, and in other cases it may be acceptable with an epoxy or vinyl ester such as: Tankguard Storage and Chemflake Special.

4. Structural Steel

Structural steel has the widest range of HPI systems available. It is however very much dependent upon whether it is new construction or for maintenance and a cosmetic finish.

For new steel a zinc silicate coating such as Jotun Resist 86 can provide excellent corrosion protection as a single coat or as part of a complete coating system. It is heat resistant up to 540°C and can be used as a primer in a coating system or as a single coat system in atmospheric environments.

For repair and maintenance during construction a zinc epoxy coating like Jotun Barrier Smart Pack can be a robust choice. After a zinc primer a mid-coat is needed to build the system and to protect the primer from weathering and erosion. A product such as Jotamastic Smart Pack HB then the choice of mid-coat is according to the steel exposure needed however for an area such as jetties, where abrasion is expected, a glass flake coating such as Marathon 550 followed by a topcoat or finish coat. We recommend careful consideration of the expectations, using a polysiloxane coating such as Jotun Hardtop Optima for long service life, and for an all-round topcoat, a polyurethane coating such as Jotun Hardtop XP is ideal.
